Have you ever been browsing model horse sales ads or hobby magazines and come across abbreviations that you just didn’t understand?  After all, who would know what FSOT: Chalkie OM PAM HTF and in VGC means, right?!

The Model Horse Language can be very confusing so here’s a list of terms and abbreviations to help you understand the “language” that us model horse hobbyists speak! 

• AA - Animal Artistry (maker/seller of resins)
• Ageless or Aged bronze - the decorator color released in 1991 on the "Hyksos" Arabian Commerative Edition model.
• AH - Artisan’s Hall
• AHSA - American Horse Show Association
• APH - Appaloosa Performance Horse
• Appy - Appaloosa 
• Apricot dun - the lightest shade of red dun characterized by a very pale body color
• AQHA - American Quarter Horse Association
• AR - Artist Resin
• ASB - American Saddlebred
• ASBW - American Saddlebred Weanling
• ASHF - Action Stock Horse Foal
• Bay - a horse with a reddish brown coat and black mane, tail, and points. Note: Many original finish models lack black legs, and although they are called bay, they are not "true bays".
• BB - Black Beauty
• BF/Bfest - Breyerfest; an annual model horse collector's convention held inLexington, Kentucky at the end of July.
• BFA - Border Fine Arts
• BHR - Black Horse Ranch; a model horse vendor that also sells their own line of resin models.
• Black - a horse whose entire coat, mane, and tail are black with the exception of white markings.
• BMHR - Breyer Model Horse Registry.
• BO - Best Offer 
• Body - a model that has been badly scratched or broken and is considered good only for repainting or customizing.
• Breyer - the division of Reeves International that creates animal figurines (mainly horses) from cellulose acetate (and ABS) and the accompanying accessories.
• BreyerFest - annual live show and model horse celebration sponsored by Breyer. One of a kind and special run models are made available to attendees of this large, fun event.
• BRS - Blue Ribbon Sticker
• Buckskin - a golden/yellow coat with a black mane, tail, and points; genetically a result of a single dilution gene on the bay base coat.
• CAF - Classic Arabian Foal
• CAM - Classic Arabian Mare
• CAS - Classic Arabian Stallion
• CE - Commemorative Edition; a single piece produced annually and limited in number
• CG - Custom Glaze
• Chalky - a Breyer model with a white base coat that appears chalky in color. Chalkies were usually molded out of colored plastic (which is why they had to have a white base coat).
• Champagne - a classification of dilute colors distinct from the dun groupings. Champagne horses have pinkish or light brown skin and amber eyes and can be divided into: amber champagne, gold champagne, and ivory champagne.
• Classic - the second largest Breyer scale
• CL/Cl. - Class-Sized Model
• Clyde – Clydesdale
• CM - a customized model that may be either repainted, haired or altered in some way that is no longer original finish.
• COA - Certificate of Authenticity - a paper included with many Limited Edition and Connoisseur Models that confirms that the model is indeed a limited edition. Models complete with COA generally sell for more than a similar model without.
• Collector's Choice/Collector's Edition - gives Breyer fans a voice in creating a model for the Traditional line. It consists of a spring and fall edition, each produced for six months (January through June, July through December).
• Colt - a male horse under the age of four years.
• Conga Line - a collection of models in the same mold. The term refers to how certain molds, when lined up one after another, look like they're dancing in a conga line.
• Connoisseur Model - a Traditional model available only to subscribers of Breyer's Just About Horses magazine. Highly detailed and produced in a very limited run of 350 models, these models are considered highly collectible.
• Copenhagen - dappled light blue; one of the original four Breyer decorator colors released in the 1960s.
• CWP - Cantering Welsh Pony
• CV - Color Variation
• Dam - a mother horse
• Deco - decorator
• Decorator - any of the unrealistic model colors produced by Breyer mainly in the 1960s. Decorator colors include: ageless bronze, Copenhagen, Florentine, gold charm, Wedgewood, and silver filigree.
• DG - Dapple grey
• Disc - discontinued; no longer in production
• Etchie - Etched Model
• EW – Eyewhites
• FAF - Family Arabian Foal mold (Julian)
• FAM - Family Arabian Mare (Galena)
• FAS - Family Arabian Stallion (Devil Wind)
• FCM - Factory Customized Model
• FEI - Federation Equestre Internationale (International Equestrian Federation).
• Filly - a female horse under the age of four.
• Florentine - dappled metallic gold with white mane and tail; one of the original decorator colors released in the 1960s.
• Foal - a baby horse
• FS - For Sale; Fighting Stallion; Foundation Stallion
• FSOT - For Sale or Trade
• FT - For Trade
• G1 – The first generation (set of molds) in the Stablemates scale. They first appeared in the 1970s and were based on models from Hagen-Renaker. The molds are: Arabian Mare, Arabian Stallion, Citation, Draft Horse, Morgan Mare, Morgan Stallion, Native Dancer, Quarter Horse Mare, Quarter Horse Stallion, Saddlebred, Seabiscuit, Silky Sullivan, Swaps, Thoroughbred Lying Foal, Thoroughbred Mare, Thoroughbred Standing Foal.
• G2 – The second generation/set of Stablemates, released in 1998 and 1999 and sculpted by Kathleen Moody. The molds are: American Saddlebred, Andalusian, Appaloosa, Arabian (Rearing), Cantering Foal, Clydesdale, Morgan (Prancing), Mule, Paso Fino, Scrambling Foal, Scratching Foal, Shetland Pony, Thoroughbred, Trotting Foal, Warmblood.
• G3 – The third generation/set of Stablemates, released between 2005 and 2007 and sculpted by Jane Lunger. The molds are: Andalusian, Arabian, Cantering Stock Horse, Cantering Warmblood, Friesian, Highland Pony, Lying Foal, Mustang, Peruvian Paso, Standing Foal, Standing Stock Horse, Standing Thoroughbred, Tennessee Walking Horse, Warmblood Jumper.
• G4 – The fourth generation/set of Stablemates, released in 2010 for the WEG. The molds are: Jumping Horse, Endurance Arabian, Eventing Thoroughbred, Dressage Warmblood, Reining Quarter Horse, Driving Horse, Vaulting Draft Horse, Para-Dressage Horse.
• Gelding - a castrated/altered male horse.
• Gl. – Glossy
• Glossy - model with an *extremely* shiny finish (not to be confused with semi-gloss)
• Gold Charm - a solid metallic gold decorator color (usually with white mane and tail); one of the original four Breyer decorator colors released in the 1960s.
• Hagen-Renaker - American ceramic horse manufacturer
• Hano – Hanoverian
• Hart – Hartland
• Hartland - another brand of model horses similar to Breyer.
• HI - Holiday Inn, the host hotel for Breyerfest in Kentucky; Horse Illustrated
• HIN - Holiday Inn North
• Hinney - a hybrid resulting from the breeding of a female donkey (jennet) and a male horse (stallion).
• H-R/HR - Hagen-Renaker
• HTF - Hard to Find
• Huck - Huckleberry Bey
• IMC - Iron Metal Chief; a Breyer Missouri Fox Trotter mold sculpted by Kathleen Moody.
• IP - Indian Pony
• IQH - Ideal Quarter Horse
• IRL - In Real Life
• ISH - Ideal Stock Horse
• Jack - a male donkey.
• JAH - Just About Horses; the official publication of Breyer.
• Jam - Jamboree (The Model Horse Jamboree)
• Jamboree - a model horse collector's convention second to Breyerfest in size; held in California annually in August.
• JCP - JC Penney
• Jennet - a female donkey.
• Jenny - a jennet or female donkey.
• JH - John Henry
• JM - Justin Morgan
• John - a castrated/gelded male donkey or mule.
• Khemo – Khemosabi
• LB - Little Bit; the Breyer Scale that falls between Stablemate and Classic (a.k.a. Paddock Pal).
• LDF - Lying Down Foal
• LE - Limited Edition; a model released for a limited period of time, usually one year or six months in the case of the Collector's Edition.
• LF - Lying Foal
• LG - Lonesome Glory
• LJJ - Laurie Jo Jensen (customizer/artist)
• L/L - Long/Long (refers to the PS ISH mane/tail)
• LP - Lady Phase; a Breyer stock horse mold.
• LS - Live Show
• LSASE - Long Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope; this usually means a business-sized envelope (as opposed to smaller envelopes used for stationary, etc.).
• LSQ - live show quality; high enough quality to be shown at a model horse exhibition; a very subjective term.
• Mare - a female horse or pony that is four years of age or older.
• Matte - the most common finish on Breyer models; "matte" models may appear anywhere from dull to satiny.
• MEPSA - Model Equine Photo Shower Association
• MFT - Missouri Fox Trotter
• MHS - Model Horse Show
• MIB - Mint in Box; Practically Flawless or Perfect in Box
• MIC - Made in China
• MIJ - Made in Japan (usually refers to Chinas)
• Mint - perfect in every way, without scuff marks, breaks, or manufacturer's flaws
• MIP - Mint in Package; Practically Flawless or Perfect in Package
• MLP - My Little Pony
• MM - Micro Mini
• MOC - Mint on Card; Practically Flawless or Perfect on Blister Card
• Molly - a female mule. Note: The vast majority of mules can not have foals!
• MOW - Man O' War
• M/T - Mane and Tail
• Mule - a hybrid resulting from the breeding of a male donkey (jack) and a female horse (mare). Nearly all mules are sterile (with a few RARE exceptions).
• MW – Breyer Mini-Whinnie micro-mini size models.
• MX - Model Exchange (an auction site)
• NAMHSA - North American Model Horse Show Association; the organization through which models qualify for NAN.
• NAN - North American Nationals; a national show that alternates between Kentucky and California where qualified model horses compete.
• NAN Qualified - a horse that has won 1st or 2nd in a NAMHSA live show, qualifying it to enter the next NAN.
• NIB - New in Box; still fastened to box (for newer models) or never removed.
• NL - North Light, a model horse company
• NM - Near Mint (most often); new mold
• NR - No Reserve
• NRFB - Never removed from box
• NSH - National Show Horse
• OB or O/B - Owned By
• OBO - Or Best Offer
• OF - Original Finish; a model in its original condition from a mass-producing factory.
• OM - Old Mold - sometimes Breyer makes a slight or significant change to an existing mold. Models made under the older mold are sometimes referred to as "old mold." One example of this is the Proud Arabian Mare.
• OOAK - One of a kind - a model that is not from a run of similar models. Usually indicates a test run or a single model produced for a specific event. Also sometimes used to refer to customized models when the artist has not made other models using the same mold and color pattern.
• OPS - Online Photo Show
• OS - Original Sculpture
• PA - Pedigree Assignment (model horse breeding); Proud Arabian
• PAF - Proud Arabian Foal
• Paint - a pinto horse of STOCK HORSE breeding.
• Palo – Palomino
• Palomino - a golden/yellow coat with a white mane and tail; genetically a result of a single dilution gene on the chestnut base coat.  
• PAM - Proud Arabian Mare
• PAS - Proud Arabian Stallion
• PBR - Puyallup Breyer Roundup; Professional Bull Riding
• Ped – Pedigree
• Peter Stone - a former employee of Breyer who now has his own line of [Peter Stone] models.
• PH - Performance Horse
• Piebald - a black and white pinto/paint horse.
• Pinto - a horse with large patches of white and another color. See: PAINT
• POA - Pony of the Americas
• Points - usually refers to the lower legs, eartips, muzzle, mane, and tail especially when speaking of color.
• PP - Pre-Production model; Paddock Pal (a.k.a. Little Bit)
• PPD - Postage Pre-paid
• Pre-Pro - Pre-Production Model
• PS - Photo Show; Peter Stone
• PSQ - photo show quality; usually of slightly lesser quality than LSQ.
• PT - Partial Trade
• PSQ - Photo Show Quality
• QH - Quarter Horse
• QHG - Quarter Horse Gelding
• QHY - Quarter Horse Yearling
• QVC/Q2 - cable shopping networks that occasionally offer Breyer Special Runs for sale.
• Rep - Repaint; Reputation
• RF - Running Foal
• RH - Repainted and Haired
• RL - Rugged Lark
• RM - Running Mare
• ROA - Rip-Off Artist
• Roan - a mixture of white and colored hairs usually with dark points. Note: Original finish models that are "roan" usually are of pale body color with darker faces and points.
• RR - repainted and remade, also (more recently) Regular Run, as opposed to Special Run
• RRH - Repainted, Remade, and Re-haired (customized model)
• RRQH - Rio Rondo Quarter Horse 1
• RS - Running Stallion
• SAE - self-addressed envelope minus the stamp.
• SASE - self-addressed, stamped envelope. Always send a SASE if you need a response!
• SB - Saddlebred; sometimes Standardbred
• SBW - Saddlebred Weanling
• Semi-gloss - a shiny model that is not considered a glossy
• S/D - Sire/Dam; a horse's parents (usually referring to a S/D List)
• SHF - Stock Horse Foal
• Silver filigree - the metallic dappled silver (w/ white mane and tail) Decorator color released in 1993 on the Breyer Proud Arabian Mare special run.
• Sire - a father
• SHM - Stock Horse Mare
• SHS - Stock Horse Stallion
• S/L - Short/Long (refers to the PS ISH mane/tail)
• SLT - State Line Tack
• SM - Stablemate
• Special run - a model produced for a certain event or business that is not part of the regular line.
• SR - Special Run
• SRM - Semi-Rearing Mustang
• SS - Stud Spider
• SSHF - Standing Stock Horse Foal
• Stallion - a male, uncastrated horse over the age of 4 years.
• STBD – Standardbred
• TB – Thoroughbred
• Test color - a one-of-a-kind original finish model produced by the factory as a way of trying out different colors and painting techniques. Several test color pieces are auctioned off annually at Breyerfest for rather large sums of money.
• THHN - The Hobby Horse News (hobby magazine)
• TOC - Touch of Class
• TOPSA - The Totally Online Photo Show Association
• TP - Time Payment
• Trad - Traditional-Sized Model
• Traditional - the largest and most common Breyer models
• Trak – Trakehner
• TR - Test Run
• TRU - Toys R Us
• TS - Tent Special (at BreyerFest)
• TSC - Tractor Supply Company
• TT - Top Ten
• TU - Touched Up; a model that has added markings or whose rubs have been painted and thus can no longer be consider original finish.
• TWH - Tennessee Walking Horse/Tennessee Walker. (often refers to Breyer's "Midnight Sun" mold)
• UP or U/P – Unpainted
• USET - United States Equestrian Team
• VG/VGC - Very good condition
• WB – Warmblood
• Warmblood - technically any "breed" that developed from a mixture of "hot" blood (Arabian, Thoroughbred, etc.) and "cold" blood (draft breeds); today it usually refers to many of the sport horses commonly seen performing in dressage, eventing, jumping, etc. Examples: Dutch Warmblood, Trakehner, Hanoverian, etc.
• WCHE - World Champion Horse Equipment - former name of a company that sold a series of Midnight Sun special runs. Now known online as eHorseEquipment.com, where a limited selection of those models may still be available and others are sold.
• Wedgewood Blue - solid light blue usually with white mane/tail; one of the original four Breyer Decorator colors released in the 1960s.
• WEOTT/WEIOTT - whatever else is on the table
• WG – Woodgrain
• WH - Western Horse
• Woodie – Woodgrain
• Woodgrain - a model painted to look like it is made of wood.
• WP - Western Pleasure
• WPH - Western Pleasure Horse
• WTB - Wanted to Buy
• WTTF - Wanted to Trade for
• ZPB - Zippo Pine Bar
